rehearsal footage.

This footage was about a month before the show went up...

We need to work on pace and timeing and in some parts the harmonies, and mostly looking like we are enjoying ourselves while singing and to have fun with it.

After this we learnt all songs and then had to add the movement ...

Our vocals were not as concentrated as we were focusing a lot on the movement however this was onyl our first run, We need to tighten up on pace as we are all going at different speeds and are getting confused. Also in some parts we look quite squeezed together so we need to make use of the stage. Another improvement is knowing the movement, sometimes we forget the left and right and a lot of the time its me. After we gain focus and get to know the movement better I'm sure we will be able to get into the swing of things.

Evaluation

Evaluation

At the beginning of March we put on a show containing group and solo songs. All of us performed on the stage at some point. I feel I did well but there was much room for improvement. The performance as a whole went well. We all remembered our lines and were all familiar with the show from which it had originated.

I think I should have rehearsed more, for example singing alongside the backing music and with the fellow members of my group, this is because we were ever so slightly out of time in some parts. We took advice on how to take care of our voices prior to the performance for example not eating dairy products and getting plenty of sleep and rest. However I was ill the week before with a bad cold which had effected my throat and the ability to practise this was an unfortunate occurrence. Ideally I would have spent more time practising so that it was to standard that I was happy with. In preparation for the performance I watched other performers online and looked at different styles, costume and movement, so that we could present the song in an entertaining way. Our main influence was from the film Chicago, here is a clip…

The reason we wanted to perform this is because it’s got a powerful tone and we wanted to do a girls group because we felt we would be able to work hard together. I feel it the song worked well though we did come across difficulties with it. For example, due to the absence of one member we had to find a replacement, rehearsals were tricky missing one singer as we all had equal parts and the performance didn’t come together as a whole. The replacement quickly got up to speed and we were able to move forward. Also I struggled along the way with singing as I am not confident with the whole singing performances. The part with all of us singing as group allowed me to feel more confident because other voice were active at the same time I was and my solos were in short bursts. For my next singing performance I intend to extend my solos but I will practise for longer periods in order to build my confidence prior to performing.

At the beginning of the performance rehearsals we found organising the movement challenging because there was a lack of imagination around simplifying original moves. In the end we came up with some of our own, which were only simple movements but worked well. I feel if we had too much movement then we wouldn’t have focussed on our singing as much and the vocal would have suffered. Even given the simplicity of the dance I missed my cue to drop down at the end, I don’t think many people noticed. Next time I will practise more and the movement in general needed more rehearsals so that it came naturally and we wouldn’t have to think about it.

The arrangement of the song was as it was presented in the film Chicago with some differences we didn’t have a male intro and I think the arrangement suffered for it as without the male part at the start the instrumental intro went on for too long. Also, the part which is usually sung in Russian we translated into English and whilst this was done very well by the person who performed it, after speaking to an audience member,  it lacked the mysterious quality of the original arrangement  it did not sound as romantic. As well as this it did not cause the audience to feel empathy towards that storyline because in the original you feel sorry for her as she can’t speak English so she can’t defend herself. However we felt at the time trying to sing the part in Russian given that none of us spoke Russian would not be delivered well as we do not have the accent or proper tutoring from someone that has spoken Russian and we did not have time to learn it and put it in to the song.

As it was a family show with all age ranges in the audience (family and friends) we dressed accordingly to the song and appropriately for the audience members. We all wore black tight fitting clothes, that covered us but were easy to move in, which helped when doing the movements as it enabled breathing easily. Thankfully there were no wardrobe malfunctions which one of the other groups experienced which surprised the performer.

The stage was arranged at different levels courtesy of the rostra. This made the performance more interesting as the vocalists were at different heights and you could see the performers more clearly, this made the performers and movements look more entertaining and you could see them all clearly. If we were to perform it again I think we should make use of the stage and the rostra more to create more dynamic feel. The lighting helped create the impact as we used strong lighting colours like reds and whites. We also used spot lighting for the individual solos whilst the rest of the group were in darkness so the focus was all centred to the person speaking. This added intensity to the lyrics being sung. I would not have changed anything in the lighting as I felt it strengthened the performance overall.

I took part to focus on the role before I sang, even though it was singing I still had a character to portray as the song is from a musical. I sung the part of Liz, who shot her husband in the head. I started the performance and had the responsibility of cueing everyone in timing wise. This took a lot of practise but I feel I got it right one the day as the group all came in on time. We all had mics; I sang confidently and loudly and got the audience’s attention as I heard a reaction, which slightly made it hard to keep my focus. I feel I could of done better in the singing part if I wasn’t as ill and worked a lot harder. Overall it was received well and got a good audience reaction, with very positive feedback following the show.

Week Before the Show

Week Before the Show

Alongside our singing teacher is has been decided that I will not be performing my solo as I have been ill for a few weeks and have not yet fully recovered, also didn’t have enough time to practise as I had been doing the children’s theatre tour. However, I have not completely lost the as I will be performing in front of a camera instead, so, I will still have to rehearse once I get better from illness.
Also, I still have Chicago’s Cell Block Tango to perform which is a lot easier because I don’t have to sing the whole song by myself. However, we did not have an extra person to take the place of someone who had dropped out previously. So, we asked another peer in the second year to help us out with it. It was an easy fix as she learnt the lyrics quickly and fits in nicely with the group as a whole.

We had to get the counts right, so, we spent most of our time rehearsing the counts, for example how long we have to wait until we come in with our singing as we didn’t have a spokesperson for the start. A group member wrote down the counts as we went through it together. We also made sure each cannon and unison was in the right place and that everyone was saying the right thing at the right time.

We performed it to our singing teacher a couple of days before the show and she agreed to keep it in but she said it still needed work. We needed to work on the timing mostly and the movement because we seemed quite stiff on the stage and it wasn’t great to watch so we went away and worked on it.

Chicago

Chicago

‘Cell Block Tango’ from Chicago the musical is another song that I will be performing in a group for the performance however is started off not so well as all the timing to losing our spot for the show. The reason for our timing was because we all rehearsed individually which meant the group together were not as slick.

Chicago is one of my favorite musicals and with this song I know characterisation is key. All the characters in this song were very powerful in each of their speeches they dominate the stage.  I have watched the musical a few times and I know the plot so that gave me an understanding of what sort of emotion needs to be used for my interpretation of it.

Lyric Meanings

Lyric Meanings

We had an activity today, there were lyrics stock to different parts of the classroom. This was to help us gain the understanding that songs have meaning and that when we sing songs we should have an understanding of what they are about so that we can portray that to the audience. We were given lyrics and we had to describe what we thought they meant, and how we interpreted them so there were no right answers. We then discussed how we would communicate them on stage to the audience.

1. I think its about despair and possible heartbreak, it seems as though the writer is trying to make you imagine the way they feel.

2. I think these lyrics are about someone have these feelings for another but it turns out they who they thought they were. its telling us someone might look lovely but not actually be when you get to know them.

3. This one is similar to number one but this time the person can see through the significant other, and the person doesn't just want to be like every other man the women comes across.

4. This person has all the questions in their head but they cant think how to answer it, them saying the answers are in the 'air' signifies to me that there can be an answer to all their ponders somewhere but he cant see them just yet, so he doesn't know what they are.

5. This one is tricky and i find it hard to find a meaning, it seems like the person is saying that them and the other can still get to know each other and there is still time but he is saying it in different metaphorical ways.

***

Our teacher showed us something like this to show how the singers are showing emotion in their performance and keeping the audience gripped not only with their voice but with movement also. Hand gestures and facial expression are mostly used, the body can sway but it isn’t as big of a movement as the hand gestures. It portrays that you don’t need to do too much like dance as well as sing to keep the audience entertained.

Auditions

Auditions

We had one to one auditions to get our solo or duet into the show as we are now sharing the show with the second years. I chose to sing and play guitar in my audition. I went through quite a lot of songs prier the audition to try and find the best song for my voice. I chose the song I did because it was suggested to me by my teacher that it might be an idea that I could play guitar so I can adjust the song to suit me, this was because the song I was thinking of originally had a acoustic version which was quite nice. I looked through a few songs for example Ed Sheerans version of ‘No Diggity’ and then started to look through song that I could remake myself and ended up using ‘Dirty Little Secret’ by blink 182.

My audition was not my best as I procrastinated so long on what song to sing, I didn’t have enough time left to learn all the chords and lyrics, so the audition was a bit stop start and also because I was quite nervous that didn’t help me very much at all. In future I will take more time out to rehearse and make sure I have it at the best standard I can get to.

The week after the audition a list of who were going to be in the show was pinned to our notice board. I was on the possible list. If I had my song ready in time for the performance I would be in the show. To improve on my song I think I need to get the lyrics in my mind first then I can change the tempo and pitch of the music to suit my voice. My schedule is to do an hour of practise a day to get the song right.

Warm ups and Rehearsing

Warm ups and Rehearsing

Now that all our group songs were in place we needed to start practicing the songs at home and warming up so that our vocals can sustain throughout the songs. For example we did vocal warm ups with our teacher Chloe. We can also use ones that we have found online as well that we can use for home practice.

Now that we have those we can use other vocal warm ups that we know of and some we can find online.

I need to improve on my breathing and control. I need to know my breaking point and how I can make the transition to my head voice a lot smoother. Also I feel like I could do better but I will film this again closer to the date of the performance to see if there have been any changes.
